What to check before choosing a model

How to choose a shop fan

Bench fan or shop fan. Decide whether you are cooling one person at one station or moving air through the whole room. A 14- to 20-inch wall or pedestal fan aimed at a bench does the first job well. A 24-inch drum or a larger wall fan does the second. For big shops and warehouses, our large industrial fan picks start at 7,000 CFM.

Keep dust out of the airstream. A fan is comfort equipment, not dust control. OSHA explains that local exhaust captures contaminants at or near the source, while general ventilation lets them into the room air first. Run dust collection at the saw or sander, and aim the fan so it does not blow the dust plume toward you or the finishing area.

Think about the circuit. Shop fans often share a circuit with a table saw, compressor or dust collector. Check the nameplate of everything on the circuit.

Mount it where it works. Wall and pedestal fans keep the floor clear and lift the stream above bench height, which helps when the floor is full of machines, carts and offcuts. Drum fans are easy to reposition but need a cord route away from rolling stock and foot traffic. Follow each manual's mounting and location instructions, and use a fan in a damp or unheated shop only when its manual documents that rating.
