What to check before choosing a model

Choosing a 36-inch drum fan

Replacing a Lakewood. Lakewood's 36-inch drum fan is discontinued, so owners replacing one need another 36-inch-class fan. A replacement should match or beat its reach without overloading the circuit, which is why we lead with documented airflow and power. The iLiving ILG8M36-90DC lists 16,000 CFM on 250 W and 3.3 A at 120 V, so it runs on an ordinary outlet.

Direct drive or belt drive. Direct-drive drums are simpler and have fewer wear parts. Belt-drive models such as the Global Industrial 48-inch and the Maxx Air 60-inch typically keep the motor out of the direct airstream, but belts need periodic checks and adjustment. Either way, follow the manual's maintenance schedule.

Plan the space. A 36-inch blade sits in a frame that is wider than 36 inches once wheels and tilt brackets are added, and most listings do not publish full dimensions. Measure doors, aisles and the tilt envelope before you order, and keep the cord out of traffic.

Spacing more than one fan. For barns and long buildings, Penn State Extension recommends circulation fans in a line be no more than eight times their diameter apart, and two to three diameters apart side by side. For 36-inch fans in a line, that is roughly 24 feet between fans. The same source prefers air speeds of 3-1/2 to 5 mph in cow resting, feeding and holding areas.

Electrical and location. Big drum fans vary widely in motor size and current draw, and several of our picks publish none. Check the nameplate before plugging a large fan into a circuit shared with other equipment, and use a drum fan outdoors or in a wet area only when its manual documents that rating.

Circulation is not ventilation. A drum fan moves air around a building; it does not exchange it with the outdoors. The Department of Energy notes that fans cool people, not rooms, so aim it at the people or animals you want to cool. For heat removal, pair it with exhaust fans and a replacement-air path.

How far apart should large drum fans be placed?
Penn State Extension's dairy guidance puts circulation fans in a line no more than eight times their diameter apart, which works out to about 24 feet for a 36-inch fan, and two to three diameters apart side by side. Use it as a starting point and adjust to the building.
Direct drive or belt drive?
