How we evaluate fans

Start with the job

A floor fan, shutter exhaust fan and ceiling fan solve different problems. We compare products within an appropriate use and explain when another type is a better starting point.

Compare like with like

We consider airflow, mounting, size, controls, power requirements, stated environmental ratings and warranty information where available. A missing noise measurement is unknown; we do not translate marketing language such as “quiet” into a decibel value.

Listed airflow may be measured under different conditions. An exhaust fan's installed airflow depends on system resistance. CFM alone does not tell us how fast the air moves at a person or how evenly it reaches a room.

Evidence and dates

Product records can come from legacy site data, manufacturer specifications or other identified sources. A source or import timestamp describes the record; it is not a promise that the model is currently available. Manufacturer evidence is shown when it has been checked. Verify model numbers and current specifications before purchasing.

No invented testing or scores

Research-based pages are not hands-on reviews. We do not infer noise, build quality or value scores from a product photo or list of features. Comparison tables report known differences; an overall winner needs an actual use case and supporting evidence.

Affiliate relationships

We may earn a commission after a reader follows an affiliate link. Commission is not a specification and does not establish product suitability. Read the affiliate disclosure.

Calculator method

The CFM calculator publishes its formula, assumptions and sources. Its room drawing illustrates an arrangement; it does not claim to solve fluid dynamics or verify an industrial ventilation design.
