What to check before choosing a model

Choosing a garage exhaust fan

Size it from the garage, not the fan. Multiply the garage's floor area by its ceiling height, choose an air-change rate for the job, multiply, and divide by 60. A 24 × 24 × 9-foot garage holds 5,184 cubic feet, so an assumed 3 air changes per hour works out to about 259 CFM of delivered airflow. The CFM calculator runs the arithmetic and keeps it separate from circulation. A listed CFM is usually a free-air rating; screens, shutters and ducts reduce what the fan delivers, so leave margin.

Plan the replacement air. An exhaust fan can only move out as much air as can come in. Put an intake opening on the far side of the garage so fresh air sweeps across the space. The iLIVING ILG8SF24V-T manual calls for discharge outdoors with an intake opening on the opposite side, and specifies indoor installation even though the fan exhausts outside.

Plug-in or hard-wired. Plug-in fans such as the Maxx Air IF14UPS and iLIVING ILG8SF24V-T are easier for renters and quick installs. Hard-wired shutter fans like the Global Industrial 12-inch pick are cleaner permanent installations but need an electrician. Either way, follow the manual's electrical requirements.

Control it automatically. A thermostat or timer keeps a garage from overheating when nobody is home. Check whether it is built in, as on the iLIVING pick, or an add-on that must match the fan's electrical rating.

Fumes are a different problem. Never rely on an exhaust fan to make an idling car, generator or fuel-burning heater safe; the EPA advises against idling a vehicle in a garage even with the door open.
