What to check before choosing a model

Choosing a barn fan

Circulation over the animals. For heat relief, the goal is air speed where animals stand, eat and rest. Penn State Extension prefers 3-1/2 to 5 mph air speeds in resting, feeding and holding areas, and recommends circulation fans in a line no more than eight times their diameter apart, or two to three diameters apart side by side. For a row of 36-inch fans, that means one about every 24 feet.

Exhaust for enclosed buildings. Closed barns, poultry houses and hay lofts can trap heat, humidity and dust. An exhaust fan such as the Maxx Air 36-inch pick pulls that air out, but only if replacement air can come in at the far end. Dust, moisture and location ratings. Barns are harder on fans than shops. None of our picks documents a wet-location rating, and some drums in the full list, such as the iLIVING ILG8MF24-77, are documented as not rated for outdoor use. Keep fans out of washdown areas unless the manual allows it, and clean guards and blades regularly, because dust buildup reduces airflow and adds heat to the motor.

Mount high and out of reach. Wall-mount and yoke-mount fans keep the floor clear and stay away from curious animals. Drum fans are handy in aisles and doorways but need a stable spot and a cord route that animals cannot reach or chew. The Tornado 24-inch wall fan pick lists a 6.6-foot cord, so plan the outlet and a solid mounting point together.

Power in older barns. Many barns run on limited, aging circuits. Among our picks, the iLiving 36-inch drum lists 3.3 A and the Tornado 24-inch wall fan 1.3 A at 120 V, but several large drums publish no electrical data at all. Have a qualified electrician check the circuit and ground-fault protection before adding big fans.

What is the best barn fan?
On our published rubric, the iLiving ILG8M36-90DC drum fan scores highest among 24-inch-and-larger barn fans, with 16,000 CFM on 250 W and a tilting frame. For the most plausible airflow, the Global Industrial 48-inch drum lists 19,500 CFM. Neither documents a wet-location rating.
How far apart should barn fans be?
Penn State Extension recommends circulation fans in a line be no more than eight times their diameter apart, and two to three diameters apart when side by side. Large HVLS ceiling fans should hang over the animals, usually no more than twice their diameter apart.
Circulation fan or exhaust fan for a barn?
They do different jobs. Circulation fans raise air speed over animals and people; exhaust fans pull hot, humid or dusty air out of an enclosed building and need a planned inlet. Many barns use both.
Can I use a regular drum fan in a barn?
Only where its manual allows the location. Barns are dusty and often damp, and several fans here are documented as indoor-only or publish no location rating. Keep fans and cords out of reach of animals, keep blades and guards clean, and have a qualified electrician check barn circuits.
